Choosing Exterior Wood Cladding

What exactly is exterior wood cladding? Exterior wood cladding is a common, highly-used exterior finish for residential buildings - 'cladding' describes a protective covering for the outside elements, such as windows, doors and skylights, and all the parts attached to it to achieve it. It comes in a wide variety of species (the actual wood that the wood came from varies by species) and is typically machined to an assortment of profile sizes to suit the buildings in which they are to be used. It provides a highly durable, attractive surface against the natural elements, such as rain, wind and sunlight. Wood is one of the most successful materials for exterior wood cladding, due to its natural beauty and durability. See page for more info on exterior wood cladding.

When using wood as the underlying structural member of exterior wood cladding, the outer layer provides a highly durable protection from both rain and sunlight. The wood siding is often made from oak, beech or walnut, and may feature decorative features such as decorative mortise and tenon joinery or decorative stucco finishes. The siding may also incorporate metal components such as corrugated iron, stainless steel or aluminum, and these are then incorporated into the design to give the final product a durable and attractive finish.

With an aesthetic or functional purpose in mind, exterior wood cladding can also be used for other projects. Houses are frequently constructed with siding for the same reason: to provide a highly durable, attractive, moisture resistant surface against the elements. It provides a waterproof, durable and aesthetically pleasing surface against the elements. Using high quality siding is therefore important for houses with heavy, continuous snow loads and for use on outdoor patios and decks. Exterior wood finishing is often applied for aesthetic reasons, but can also provide durable protection against rain and wind. They are also good for creating a water tight seal against damage caused by water leaks.

While exterior wood cladding has a wide variety of uses, they all share a common quality. They are highly durable, and low maintenance. As they are usually made from solid wood, they require little care and maintenance, and they are naturally resistant to insects, decay and rotting. In addition, they are fire retardant and require very little maintenance for termite resistance. Some can even withstand attacks from termites that destroy siding. The durability and low maintenance of this type of material make it the perfect choice for a wide variety of projects.

Even with the low maintenance and durability of exterior wood cladding, however, it is not suited to every project. Exterior timbers do not have a smooth, glossy surface, and they can be damaged by a number of different things. Weather, such as rain, sleet or hail can damage timbers. Water or oil stains can also cause damage, and insect infestations can leave unsightly holes in the exterior wood cladding.

Wood board fixings make replacing or repairing damaged boards much easier. Some types of wood do not respond well to use of fasteners, and other fixings may be more appropriate for use with certain types of wood. Wood board fixings are typically sold as strips of wood, and installation should only be done after these strips are removed. These fixings can also be used on plywood, but timbers may not be recommended due to insect resistance.
